The Hidden Well of Creativity the Right Playlist Can Unlock
By Daniel Okereke
You know, I've talked a bit about how much I love music, but I'd really like to dig deeper and share some of the reasons why it's so meaningful to me. In this article, I'm going to explore the incredible ways that music can harmonize our work. But first, let’s start with a small gist.
Here goes….
I am a professional content writer, and this means that I don’t only write for the fun of it. I also write and get paid for it. Now, during the long hours of sitting and working, I would usually just play music to distract my mind from the mental strain that goes with it. On one such day, I realized something different. Guess what? I found out music’s potential to enhance productivity and creativity. It’s not like I haven’t heard about it before, but I just haven’t experienced it myself. So on that day, I was just there, sitting at my desk, staring blankly at the computer screen as I attempted to plow through loads of research that I had to do.
My mind felt foggy, my motivation was waning, and I was on the verge of throwing in the towel.
In a moment of desperation, I decided to put on one of my go-to instrumental playlists, hoping the soothing melodies would at least make the mental drag a bit more bearable. What happened next came off to me as a surprise—my mood fell into sync and gradually elevated!
The music energized my mind, helping me power through the task with renewed focus and clarity. Ideas started flowing more freely, and I found myself making connections that had eluded me before. It was as if the music had unlocked a hidden well of creativity and concentration within me.
Since that day, I became obsessed with exploring the different ways I could harness the power of music to optimize my work experience. I have spent countless hours experimenting with various genres, volumes, and playlists to discover the unique benefits that their vibes could bring to my productivity.
Let me show you what I've picked up so far…
The Genre Gameplan: I have a mixed taste when it comes to music and I’ve also come to learn that the same applies when it comes to work. Upbeat, rhythmic tracks can be fantastic for tasks that require energy and mental agility. These include activities like brainstorming sessions or presentations. But when I'm tackling work that demands deep focus and uninterrupted concentration, I find that instrumental, ambient, or classical music is far less distracting.
Volume management: One of the trickiest things about leveraging music to boost productivity at work is finding the right volume level. Why? This is because it's so easy to get carried away and max out the tunes, especially when I'm trying to block out all the office noise or distractions. But I've learned the hard way that having the music too loud can be counter-productive, making it harder to hear my own thoughts and inner voice. So, these days I keep the volume at a comfortable level. This allows me to not only hear the music but also make sure it doesn't overpower my mental processes.
Playlist curation: Another game-changing strategy I've implemented is creating specialized playlists for different work activities. For example, I have one playlist reserved for writing and research tasks, another for data analysis, and a third for meetings and collaborative work. This makes it so easy for me to just tap into the right flow and frame of mind without wasting time searching or putting something new together. It's like having my own personal DJ on deck, ready to bless me with the perfect soundtrack anytime I need it.
Binaural Bliss and Nature's Rhythms: I've also been exploring the world of binaural beats and ambient nature sounds. Research suggests that these audio experiences can induce a state of focused relaxation, enhancing our ability to concentrate and put our problem-solving skills to use. For instance, I've found that listening to a binaural beats track designed to induce alpha brain waves has been incredibly helpful for my creative writing sessions. And ambient nature soundscapes, like the soothing sounds of a forest stream, have worked wonders when I'm tackling a complex task that requires deep thinking and creativity.
The Reward Rhythm: Finally, one of my favorite ways to use music in the workplace is as a reward system. When I complete a challenging task or hit an important milestone, I'll treat myself to a carefully curated playlist or album. Not only does this provide a much-needed mental reset, but it also gives me something to look forward to as I tackle the next item on my to-do list. It's like a little musical chilled drink at the end of a sprint!
….
At the end of the day, finding the right musical groove for your work style and tasks is all about experimenting or trying out what catches your fancy. Pay attention to how different genres, volumes, and playlists make you feel, and don't be afraid to mix things up until you discover your optimal productivity harmony. Your mind (and ears) will thank you!
